Grand Seminar - AI for Biodiversity and Climate Research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way we approach research on biodiversity and climate change, opening new possibilities from monitoring species and ecosystems to improving forecasts and risk assessments. At the same time, these technologies raise important questions about reliability, transparency, ethics, and their real-world impact. This one-day programme brings together researchers from across disciplines to explore the role of AI in biodiversity and climate research.

The morning sessions will provide a broad introduction to AI, a historical perspective on its development, and concrete examples of AI tools and applications within ecology, conservation, and climate science. Poster presentations will highlight ongoing projects, offering opportunities for exchange and networking.

In the afternoon, participants will engage in an interactive workshop where challenges and opportunities of using AI in their own research will be discussed. The day concludes with a panel debate on the potentials and pitfalls of AI for biodiversity and climate research.

For those interested, the day will continue after 15 am with information from Research Service about the upcoming Horizon AI call.

BIOPATH represented in the program

In the morning session presenting examples of AI tools and applications within ecology, conservation, and climate science, Daniele Silvestro, researcher at Dep. of Biosystems Science and Engineering, ETH Zürich and active in Mistra BIOPATH, will talk about “AI optimization of ecological restoration for climate and biodiversity”.
