GRI is an independent international organisation that helps companies and other organisations to take responsibility for their impacts by providing them with a globally shared language for communicating those impacts.

CSRD, the new EU directive that requires companies to report according to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, ESRS, is based on the GRI Standards.

Over the next few years, 40 sector-specific standards will be launched. Organizations need to take into account the relevant sector standards for their materiality analysis and specific disclosure requirements. In January 2023, the first ones came out covering: oil and gas, coal, and agriculture, aquaculture & fisheries. Upcoming standards concern mining, the financial sector (banking, insurance & capital markets) and textiles.

Since 2021, there is a new version of the GRI Standards that contains the biggest update since the GRI Standards were published in 2016. It applies to all companies reporting according to the GRI Standards from reports released after January 1, 2023.
